The word impossible doesn’t exist in Tiera’s dictionary. Since she was a little girl, Tiera just loved to innovate and calculate. She would use Legos, construction blocks, construction paper, pencils, coloured pencils whatever she could put her hands on in order to turn her dreams into a reality.
At the age of only 11, she decided to be an Aerospace Engineer! She certainly knows how to turn dreams into reality. At the age of 22 she become a Rocket Engineer as a part of NASA’s space program. How did she manage to achieve her goal? The recipe to success is simple: Work, Focus, and have Faith.
AS: Tiera, I am so thrilled to have a chance to talk to you about your fascinating career as a Rocket Structural Analysis Engineer for Boeing on NASA’s space launch system. When did your passion for engineering start? What was your inspiration?
I discovered aerospace engineering at the age of eleven when Lockheed Martin came to my elementary school to recruit students for a program called L.M.S.M.A.R.T. At the time, I had an interest in mathematics, science, technology and design, but I had not heard of engineering and I definitely had not heard of aerospace engineering. The L.M.S.M.A.R.T. program taught me about aerospace engineering and I then realised that that was exactly what I wanted to do. Aerospace engineering represented a culmination of my passions with a bonus of specializing in aerospace vehicles.
AS: Working with NASA is a privilege, being a part of innovative projects. How did you achieve this?
The Boeing Company is extremely vast with numerous opportunities in the aerospace arena. After joining Boeing Research and Technology in 2015, I was then introduced to NASA’s Space Launch System program, which hired The Boeing Company (Boeing Defense, Space and Security in particular) as one of the prime contractors for the rocket.
AS: Do you believe that we can always get what we dream about?
I believe that if our dreams align with the plan that God has for our lives, then we can achieve those dreams. The best way to know that we are in alignment is to continuously seek confirmation. Confirmation can come through many avenues and a sure way to understand when confirmation is being sent is to establish a growing relationship with God. In my experience, I have seen confirmation by God closing other doors I was attempting to walk through and only leaving one door open for easy access.
AS: Do you think we should always follow our passion in life?
To me, passion means a high level of desire and motivation towards something. I have found that by first discovering your purpose, passion naturally occurs. I think that discovering your purpose is extremely important in that you reach an ultimate level of satisfaction, which in turn, ignites your passion.
AS: What motivates you?
My family motivates me every day to achieve my goals and dream bigger. They challenge me to challenge myself.
AS: What if we don’t follow our passion?
We enjoy what we are passionate about because we feel a sense of fulfilment. Without passion, we run into issues including boredom, dissatisfaction and the feeling that something is missing.
AS: During your talk in Krakow last year you mentioned that everything is energy and if we set up our minds on our goal, the rest will follow. Could you elaborate on this?
If you put your energy towards a goal, your efforts, thoughts and overall direction will go toward that goal. Do not give up, focus and always be willing to learn. Focus is a great driver for achieving a goal. My prime example would have to be the goal that I created to become an aerospace engineer when I was eleven. My academics, extracurriculars, free time and thought were all geared towards that goal in some shape or form. I set that goal as a priority in my mind and in my life and now I have achieved that goal. I wanted to become an aerospace engineer when I was eleven. My recipe to reach a higher potential: Work, Focus, and Have Faith
AS: You have recently became a Mum, how has this changed your life and priorities?
My son has truly changed the way that I approach each day. As a wife and a mother, I set out my schedule to make sure my family is taken care of. Being responsible for another life causes me to carefully consider each of my steps, no matter how small. A huge portion of my energy and time goes into preparing my son for the world, which is a very exciting process. I am thankful for our new addition. My main focus these days has been one thing: balance. Finding a balance between being a mother, wife, rocket scientist, business owner, author, mentor and part-time teacher is extremely challenging, but well-worth the effort.
AS: What are your next goals?
I have a plethora of goals to achieve as my dreams continue to expand and develop. I plan to release a children’s book called Wonder Women of Science with my co-author in 2021, further my education, grow our Rocket With The Fletchers business, pursue leadership opportunities in aerospace engineering, and much more.
AS: Many thanks Tiera for taking the time to speak to me today, you have truly inspired me today and I am so looking forward to hear from you and your fascinating projects in the future.
